Foursquare? Try Moresquare!
Foursquare is
an app that uses your location to “check” you in at various places you visit.
It also combines social networking with this location application to create a
unique platform that allows users to connect with others that have visited
these spots. You can earn badges for checking in to certain spots or doing
certain activities.
Foursquare is
ready to branch out and has basically redesigned their entire app to make it a
more interesting, user-friendly and engaging application that will bring in
some new users along with re-engaging old ones that may have left the app
behind.
What Changes Will Be Made?
Instead of
simply checking in at the store where you are purchasing men’s cufflinks,
for example, you’ll also be able to see cool places that are near your
location. The app uses GPS technology to determine your location and then suggest other places to visit nearby
They even use weather as a factor when recommending places to visit!
Users will
also find Foursquare borrowing from Facebook: users can “like” a location or
restaurant they enjoyed visiting, or “like” a friend’s ”check in” to a
location. Foursquare wants to become more of a social media app and less of a
simple “check in” app.
Nice Explore Tab!
A complaint
made by users in the past was that th Explore tab was difficult to navigate.
One of the biggest changes to Foursquare is the update to this tab, which now tailors recommendations based on the day
of the week, the time, your past “likes” and locations or friends’ locations.
Its newer buttons also make the tab easier to use.
More Revenue For Foursquare
Foursquare
will work with advertisers to create new ways to add revenue to the app.
Businesses will be able to purchase advertising space and promote their
businesses as well as display special promotions. What Foursquare is really
trying to do for businesses is pair them with people interested in their type
of business. It’s kind of a matchmaking
system for businesses and consumers.
Has ”Checking In” Checked Out?
Apps like
Foursquare are facing a downturn in popularity. While apps like Instagram are
taking off, Foursquare isn’t seeing that kind of success. They are hoping their
updates will make “checking in” more interesting, more relevant and more attractive
to users who love social media apps.
Some users of
Facebook simply “check in” using Facebook itself and don’t need or want a
separate application to tell friends where they are. But if you enjoy going out
to eat or shopping, it may be worth your time to use Foursquare to see where
your friends are going, what the best rated places to eat in your city are, and
what museum to visit on a rainy day in your town.
